In the midst of changing diapers and bathing my newborn, here’s one from a wedding last weekend.

Amelia Bay

Its been quite a week. After the bad haze last week, and a week of not running, I finally got to do my weekly run on a fine Sunday morning. I decided to clean the car after my run, as it has been sitting there with dust collecting due to the haze. After cleaning the car, I thought: Its been a while since I last cleaned the house (2 weeks), so why not take the time to clean up the house since I am all dirty and sweaty already ! So I cleaned up my place and headed over to my parent’s place for lunch. Watched a movie with my wife in the afternoon, then left for dinner at her parent’s place. Watched another movie after we got home and then went to bed.

So, after reading all that, you must be thinking: “Why is he detailing everything that happened today ?”

Because, as soon as we hit the bed, my wife went to the toilet. She came out saying:”We are not going to sleep tonight already.” I immediately knew what was going on, her water bag has broken ! So off we go to the hospital ! Hurriedly we grabbed our ready-packed items and headed to the car. Just the day before, I had asked Sara who is in Malaysia for a business trip to help me lookout for a air purifier as I had feared that the air quality will turn bad again and it is going to be bad for my baby. Sara came back today and dropped off the air purifier at my place about 9pm. The significance of writing this down ? Well, I’d say my daughter is a clever girl. She knew that the haze had passed, the car is washed, the house is cleaned and the air purifier has arrived, therefore it is now safe for her to be out and greet the world !

Fast forwarding the whole process (15 hours labour), my sweet daughter Amelia Bay was born ! It was a quick delivery but a rather scary one. My wife pushed with all her might, but could not get Amelia to be low enough to be delivered by the gynae. With the heart rate like the stock market, rising to 150 and dropping to a dangerously low 40s, the gynae decided to go for assisted delivery. She prepared the vacuum tube and with my wife’s last mighty push and the assistance of the vacuum, Amelia was out ! Gynae said that the umbilical cord was round her neck two rounds. It could have caused the resistance for her to be lower. But I thank God for her safe arrival, and keeping my wife safe from harm too. It has been a tiring night. After Amelia was delivered and washed, my wife waited in the labour ward to rest and thereafter transferred to the maternity wards.

Here’s a few photos taken:

Pumpfest 2013

Second bouldering competition for the year, and it seemed like forever from the previous one. The last major competition was National Schools Sport Climbing Championship. Didn’t have any photos, and also was a bit burnt out from the many weekends of competitions that month, so I totally forgot to blog about that competition. I’ll probably leave NSSCC for now and post about Pumpfest 2013. As usual, I brought my camera down and took a spectator spot and stationed there to cheer for my students and grab a few shots here and there, mostly from the Intermediate Women category.

The Chief Routesetters for the event were Ben Toh and Suzanna Tan from SCA and Jups from Climb Asia.

Results, again were pretty good 🙂

Gravical 2013 summary

Kickstarting the new competition season, we have Gravical 2013 organised by the Singapore Management University (SMU). I was there, tasked as a Coach, to take care of my students and provide advice where needed. In the midst of watching the competition, the shutterbug me also took the chance to whip out my camera and take some shots, from the perspective of a spectator. I’ve done my fair share of climbing competition photography as an official photographer, and have decided to take a break from shooting climbing competitions and only shoot “unofficially”. The competition official photographer probably falls under the category of: overworked, underpaid (or not paid) and under-appreciated crew of the competition. A shout out to my fellow routesetters, for routesetters, unfortunately are the ones that also fall under the category mentioned above.

I was unable to take any photos on the second day of the competition as I was being mobilised back to camp for duties. I have decided to make this series of photos in black and white so I hope it is still pleasant to most of you. I have taken the chance to try some daring compositions and angles, to see if it works out well.

I must say that I am really pleased with the results:

Springfield Secondary School (U17 Category)

Girls

Lyana – 4th

Boys

Yu Jiehui  – 4th

Boaz – 7th

Temasek Junior College (Novice Category)

Girls

Gwendolyn Chow – 1st

Janice Lim – 3rd

Xiaowen – 6th

Temasek Polytechnic (Intermediate Category)

Girls

Nadiah – 1st

Esther – 6th

Through my coaching, I hope I have in some way, positively impacted my students’ lives, be it climbing or non-climbing related. That is my philosophy of coaching. I must say, Gravical 2013 has really spurred a lot of thoughts in my mind. Watching the youths competing is refreshing and energizing, albeit tiring as I have to be on site for the whole competition. I have vague recollections of how it feels like to be a competitor and there are actually thoughts of competing in the next bouldering competition. But, I will first have to find time to have disciplined training, which is a tough thing to do at this moment. But I do hope to be able to feel how it is like to be a competitor once again, just for the fun of it 🙂

Appreciation and thanksgiving

This came in my mailbox yesterday:

Dear Garick,

From the bottom of our hearts, Lenni and I would like to thank you for a fantastic job done yesterday. We know it’s not easy working long hours, running around with us from place to place and having to lug all the heavy equipment around. Despite the hard work, I hope you have enjoyed yourself. We definitely enjoyed having you at our wedding even though you were there for work. Thank you for guiding our family members and guests on where to stand, etc. before each photoshoot. Thank you for accommodating to all our requests here and there, big or small. Thanks also for teaching my little cousin, Sarah, some new photography tips. I am sure she has learnt a great deal from you and will definitely put to good use the new knowledge she has picked up from you. Lenni says that it is indeed a blessing to have chosen you to be our photographer for our big day and I totally agree with her that we have made a right choice.. 100%!

So before I end off, here’s wishing you and all at home a very merry Christmas and a blessed new year ahead!

Regards,

Eugene & Lenni

Thank you, Eugene and Lenni, for placing your trust in me, allowing me to be there for one of the most important day of your lives. I truly enjoyed myself that day, even though I am working ! May you have a blissful journey together as Husband and Wife !

It has been a wonderful journey in my career as a photographer thus far, and I have many to thank for where I am right now. Firstly, I thank God for giving me the strength to carry on and providing me guidance along the way. Secondly, my ever-supportive wife, for tolerating my nonsense, not being able to spend time with her, and sending me to work when she is free. Thirdly, my family, for their support and love. Fourthly, my fellows at expressivelyjOhO, for helping me to improve my craft and always there to give me advice. Fifthly (?), my friends who have given me encouragement along the way. Last but definitely not the least, my corporate clients and my wedding couples, for appreciating my work and placing your trust in my hands !

With this, I would like to end off my post by wishing everyone a blessed Christmas. May God bless you and your family, and peace be forever with you always !

Gardens By The Bay

Yes, this has been the recent “shoot to death” location … but this would be my second time there only since it opened. Both times, I was there for work purposes. This time round, I was there to shoot an event setup. After my work was done, I decided to take a stroll with my lovely wife (as my tour guide) under the blazing hot sun. Took a few random shots along the way, before surrendering to the heat !
